DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
The Contract Meals and Nutrition department is responsible for all aspects of DC Central Kitchen’s nutrition programs, services, and activities, including but not limited to menu planning, nutrition education, budgeting, etc. This department also manages program compliance with relevant federal, state, and local policies, regulations, and procedures; facilitates effective business relationships with clients; and drives value through efficient service operations for contract meal programs including The Community Partnership (TCP), Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and other programming that provides meals to the community. In addition to nutrition services, this department includes our School Foods program, which provides scratch-cooked, locally sourced nutritious meals to students at multiple schools throughout Washington, D.C. and our Community Meals program, which ensures the efficient preparation and distribution of healthy meals to partner agencies (including homeless shelters, rehabilitation clinics, and after-school programs) throughout the region.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Program Manager, School Foods the Senior Lead, Food Service Worker will be responsible for providing practical technical support, sharing best practices, and one-on-one proficiency focus with other school food leads. They will also assist, assess, and facilitate the growth of current staff members (both workers and leads) for career advancement. This position will allow someone to train with new leads for extended periods of time and to problem solve and mentor existing staff to reach peak efficiency for day-to-day operations. The individual will also be required to assist in covering Lead Food Service Workers who are absent. When covering a school, the candidate will ensure daily operations are executed according to all contract requirements and company protocols. Also, the candidate will help maintain a professional clean working atmosphere adhering to all ServSafe and HACCP standards. The ideal candidate will exhibit flexibility, patience, good communication, and interpersonal skills.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Provide practical and technical support to School Food Leads and Workers (production records, creating daily task lists, receiving Sysco Orders, sharing best practices)
· Assist in private/charter school quality assurance.
· Facilitate and ensure proficiency and understanding of existing process and procedures (how to make a lunch line move faster, tally sheets, Mosaic POS, staff management tips, etc.)
· As assigned, assist in covering schools whose Lead Food Service Worker is out to maintain quality and order
· While covering a site in a Lead Food Service Worker’s absence:
- Coordinate with team members to execute breakfast, lunch, supper and all DCPS meal programs in accordance with contractual regulation and established recipes.
- Assign daily production tasks to team members making certain recipes are posted.
- Ensure all meals are accurately accounted for in the Point of Sales system and reconciled at the end of day.
- Accurately complete the production records for breakfast, lunch, and supper before and after each meal period
- Ensure all food safety SERV Safe and HACCP regulations are followed.
- Work with the School Foods Coordinator to accurately account for monthly inventory and maintain appropriate par levels, if applicableSend weekly commentary to explain the variance in student meal participation
o Communicate any meal substitutions to be approved by the Registered Dietitian
o Complete the Meal Projection form each week and send it to the Lab and Food management team
o Follow the production emergency, daily invoicing, meal projection log, school food donation, food delivery ticket and the SFS Lead Master Task List protocol each day, week and monthly
o Scan Invoices to Bill.com to ensure proper accounting is performed
o Place orders for dairy, supplies, bread, office supplies and allergy food according to established protocols
o Maintain all company records as required by contract
o Communicate with the Program Manager regarding any operational concerns including equipment and staff support
o Effectively communicate with School Foods Management team with any operational concerns
- Utilize the Point of Sales System (POS) to perform all applicable reports in Mosaic including Production Records, recipe scaling and printing
- Provide Lead Food Service Workers at other schools with focused assistance on issues identified by the Program Manager as assigned
- Maintain a positive working relationship with DCPS administration and coworkers
- Assist School Foods Management team in events and contractual requirements as assigned
- Participate in meetings with School Foods Management team
- Participate in professional development training
- Participate in activities that will promote the school food service program
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Must complete criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen and TB test
· Ability to pass a DCPS Child Protective Registry clearance check
· High School Diploma, GED, has previously served as a Lead Food Service Worker
· 5+ Years of Culinary experience
· Proficiency required in Microsoft Office, database use, Outlook, and file sorting
· Ability to lift 25 lbs., Moderate physical activity required.
· Desire to be part of a large nonprofit whose mission is to "combat hunger and create opportunity"
· Ability to maintain ServSafe Food Safety Certification
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· Comfortable with moderate physical activity is required
· Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
· Ability to perform general physical activities that require considerable use of arms, legs, and moving your whole body, such as: climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials; Ability to bend, lean, reach and stoop without hindrance; Possess adequate motor skills, stand and/or walk for long periods
· While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, use hands, fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel or crouch; talk and hear; taste or smell.
· Ability to work in an environment where exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, fumes, dirt, smoke, loud noise, and a variety of odors is common
