VCS Communications Manager Job Description
Job Summary
The VCS Communications Manager plays a vital role in promoting and communicating the values and achievements of Valley Christian Schools’ students and employees to various stakeholders, including parents, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the wider community. This position requires a mix of strategic planning, creative thinking, and strong communication skills to develop and implement effective marketing and communication strategies that align with the school's mission, vision, and goals. The Communications Manager must work closely with Vice President of Marketing and Communications, the senior leadership team, the admissions department, the advancement office, and the academic departments to create a cohesive and consistent message across all channels, including print and digital media, social media, events, and public relations efforts. Additionally, they must stay up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices in marketing and communications and be able to adjust strategies accordingly to meet changing needs and goals.
Job Duties
The Communications Manager plays a crucial role in shaping and maintaining the brand voice. This position entails overseeing all aspects of digital and print communication content. The Communications Manager should be detail-oriented with excellent communication skills, proficiency in copywriting, and expertise in web and social media best practices. H/she should have a keen eye for design and photography and collaborate with the Marketing Team to ensure VCS maintains a strong digital presence that effectively reaches key audiences and promotes the institution's image to both internal and external stakeholders. This role requires a positive and outgoing demeanor and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment that demands flexibility and persistence.
Content Creation
- Oversee the consistent application of the VCS voice across all communication channels.
- Collaborate with key departments to promote the school’s mission and vision to prospective families, current families, and the community.
- Manage a comprehensive communication plan that will disseminate to multiple social media channels that promote the initiatives and mission of the school to various stakeholders.
- Collaborate with the VP and Design Manager in overseeing the production and distribution of publications and media that serve as the recruitment vehicles for the school.
- Write and/or review all written materials and identify and correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and formatting errors. Responsible for upholding the brand’s consistency in style, tone, and language usage and aligns the intended purpose and audience.
- Develop and implement effective communication strategies that promote employee engagement, understanding, and alignment within the organization.
- Populate news posts on the website to keep the content up to date.
- Work with the VP to create compelling press releases.
- Lead the development of written content for articles and major publications, collaborating with a contract writer when necessary.
Social Media and Online Presence
- Manage the annual social media campaign and collaborate directly with the Communications Associate on daily posts and additional featured content.
- Supervise the photographer/videographer in gathering content for social media and large event projects requiring footage.
- Monitor social media conversations and manage online reputation, including regular check-ins with online review sites.
- Develop a system to encourage positive reviews of VCS on various review sites by K-12 parents.
Project Management and Coordination
- Assign tasks and coordinate with various departments, marketing team members, and the director to ensure timely project completion.
Copywriting and Editing
- Take responsibility for all marketing and promotional copy from VCS, working closely with the VP and other stakeholders to ensure high-quality content.
- Provide edits, feedback, grammar correction, and rewrites as necessary.
- Uphold and enforce corporate communication standards.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise and manage the Communications & Media Associates. Ensure they carry out their duties effectively and efficiently, including managing their workload, providing guidance and feedback, and addressing any issues or concerns.
Requirements
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the areas of marketing, branding, and communications, preferably in education.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Exceptional verbal, written, and presentation skills.
- Proficiency in copywriting and editing.
- Familiarity with web and social media best practices.
- Experience in overseeing social media content creation.
- Team player with leadership skills and experience collaborating with team members and other stakeholders.
- Detail-oriented with an eye for design and photography.
- Positive and outgoing disposition.
- Professional in appearance, manner, and representation of self and school.
- Technical knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, Google Suite, Dropbox, Constant Contact, and other systems.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
