Overview
The Engineer is responsible to the assigned supervisor for primarily performing the modeling of the SPP electrical transmission system, engineering analyses supporting Integrated Transmission Planning process, Tariff Studies and/or NERC Compliance studies as well as the coordination and competition of any special studies for Southwest Power Pool, Inc.
Essential Functions
Engineering Concepts and Tools:
Develop and maintain competence with the administrative and communication tools for word processing, spreadsheet development, time keeping, etc.
Develop and maintain a fundamental familiarity with the SPP Transmission System
Develop and maintain a fundamental level of expertise and proficiency with the SPP power system analysis tools, data management tools, and processes necessary to support the interconnection study process
Engineering Responsibilities:
As directed by the manager or more senior engineers, provide key technical support in a team environment and work towards the goals set by seniors/management.
Develop, maintain, and improve engineering processes and procedures.
Develop and exercise basic project management skills, taking responsibility for the timely and accurate completion of all assigned projects.
Keep a positive attitude, focusing on solutions, creativity, continuous improvement and bench strength development.
Follow scope and schedules developed by senior engineers/management; complete tasks as assigned and report on progress to the project leader.
Governing Processes:
Develop and maintain a basic familiarity with the content and concepts contained in the SPP Open Access Transmission Tariff, FERC & NERC governing documents, SPP Business Practices, SPP Criteria, and the SPP organizational group structure.
Develop and maintain a more detailed understanding of the specific governing and process documents specific to the evaluation of generator interconnection requests.
Stakeholder and Internal Relationships:
Develop and maintain positive stakeholder relationships as necessary to accomplish SPP objectives and assigned directives.
Develop and maintain necessary relationships with internal and external technical staff and customers to collect data and collaborate on analysis.
Engineering Judgment:
Understand the application of standard and non-standard techniques.
Complete assigned technical processes, studies, and tasks under senior engineers and management supervision.
Advise senior engineers and management about potential issues or concerns related to generation interconnection studies, processes, always adding your own engineering judgement to the conversation.
Understand the fundamentals of power systems concepts, exercising curiosity and self-awareness, understanding the “why” behind analysis and models.
Be open to learn and understand different perspectives related to the technical work.
Teamwork and Leadership Skills:
Provide basic technical support to help project groups meet aggressive time schedules.
Be pro-active, offering help and new ideas to improve the generation interconnection processes.
Exercise effective and objective communication with the generation interconnection team.

Qualifications
Education Requirements:
Bachelor of Science in Engineering, this degree should:
Be from a university that meets the requirements to sit for the Professional Engineering exam (in Arkansas, that is most typically a degree from an ABET accredited university or a graduate degree from a college that has an ABET accreditation),
Degree should be in a calculus-based engineering field and preferred degree programs are Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Systems Engineering
Experience Required:
Engineer I - No experience required
Engineer II - Two (2) years of job-related work experience
Other Requirements:
Competent with the administrative and communication tools for word processing, spread sheet development and time keeping, as a minimum
Strong inter-personal and team work skills along with excellent written and verbal communication skills
Competent working skills with communication and data handling software such as Microsoft Office© Word, Excel, Access
Preferred:
A Professional Engineer License
Graduate level degree in related field of study
Intermediate proficiency with most SPP power systems analysis tools with a solid command of several SPP tools and/or processes
Practical understanding of the SPP Open Access Transmission Tariff, FERC & NERC governing documents, SPP By-Laws, SPP Criteria and the SPP Committee structure
Strong knowledge of several power systems analysis tools applicable to power system steady state, dynamic, or database management systems
Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Requires the ability to work and collaborate with managers and employees at all levels to exchange ideas, information, and opinions to facilitate the task.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of workweek are Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Working extended hours may be required.
Travel Requirement:
This position requires minimal travel (approximately 10%)
