Job Description
Avion Solutions Inc., an employee-owned company, is seeking candidates for a Senior Propulsion Engineer to support the Systems Readiness Directorate (SRD) Propulsion Division Project Branch. This position is based in Huntsville, AL.
Job Responsibilities/Duties:
Provide engineering support for engine systems and subsystems relating to helicopters, unmanned air vehicles, and fixed-wing platforms.
Provide written recommendations regarding field inquiries concerning the serviceability of engine systems and subsystems and interpretation of airworthiness requirements.
Provide input on engine and engine component requirements documents
Review test plans, test reports, and analyses concerning compliance with specification and/or qualification requirements.
Provide recommendations on the requirements coverage, success criteria, and acceptability of the test plans and reports, risks or potential risks of the test plan and report, and corrective actions or improvements to the test plan and report.
Provide support for Test witnessing, evaluation of test results, and/or post-test inspections and recommendations regarding requirements coverage of tests and post-test hardware condition and performance.
Review changes in designs and engineering change proposals and document airworthiness concerns.
Review technical changes to manuals and maintenance procedures.
Participate in program and design reviews and technical meetings.
Support failure investigations and procedure validations/verifications.
Provide technical and project engineering support for engine-related improvements developed under the Component Improvement Program.
Provide support for Deficiency Reporting requirements including disposition of exhibits and review of investigation findings and recommendations.
Provide support for Reliability Improvement thru Failure Identification and Reporting (RIMFIRE) data review and determining the cause of hardware removal.
Provide support for Depot and repair activities to include Maintenance and Overhaul (M&O) plan and hardware repair reviews, and support of Product Verification Audits (PVAs).
Provide support for alternate source evaluations, intercept actions, and Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) engineering requests.
Provide technical support for spares procurements to include review of Source Approval Request (SAR) packages and commerciality decisions.
Provide technical support for critical safety item issues with propulsion engine systems and subsystems including hydromechanical and electronic engine controls.
Provide support for Product Lot Testing (PLTs) by reviewing drawings and identifying required inspection criteria.
Review quality escapes and Manufacturing Review Boards (MRBs) and document airworthiness concerns.
Provide technical support for Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and/or Cost Wise Readiness activities relating to engine systems or subsystems.
Provide technical input on Foreign Military Sales support.
Perform data reduction and analysis to evaluate engine and component performance and provide recommendations on the compliance of performance submittals with respect to applicable requirements along with detailed studies to determine corrective actions or improvements.
Document processes and methodologies for the design and airworthiness qualification of propulsion systems and subsystems, generate briefings and related documentation in electronic format (MS Word and PowerPoint), and provide briefings, recommendations, and analyses for Government use to ensure standardization and effectiveness of the Airworthiness process as conducted by the Propulsion Division.
Required Experience:
Bachelor of Science in Engineering with 25 yrs; or Masters of Science in Engineering with 23 yrs; or Ph.D. in Engineering with 21 yrs.
18+ years of documented engineering experience with design and development, manufacturing, maintenance, or operation of turbine engines and/or engine controls.
The candidate should have documented experience in performing risk analysis, reliability analysis, and data reduction and analysis to evaluate engine and component performance, providing recommendations on the compliance of performance submittals with respect to applicable requirements and detailed studies to determine corrective actions, improvements or assist in setting appropriate life limits and inspection intervals on critical components to ensured continued flight safety.
Experience with failure analysis of mechanical components and systems.
Experience with analyzing data from flight load surveys.
Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and parts lists.
Ability to write clear and concise analysis reports and conclusions.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must.
Experience with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Must be a US Citizen and have/able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.
Must be able to travel up to 25% of the time. US travel only.
Preferred Qualifications:
Working knowledge of multiple DoD software programs including but not limited to Product Data Reporting and Evaluation Program (PDREP), Reliability Improvement through Failure Identification and Reporting (RIMFIRE) Database System, The Army Maintenance Management System-Aviation/Maintenance Consolidated Database System (TAMMS-A/MCDS), AED Task Tracking System (TTS), and Aircraft/Engine Electronic Technical Manuals (ETMs)/Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs).
Experience with turboshaft engines such as T55-GA-714, T700-GE-701D, YT706-GE-700, and/or AE 1107C is a plus.
Experience writing and reviewing AWIS, SSRAs, System Safety Management Plans, FMECA/FEMA, and Safety Design Requirements Definition.
Working knowledge of thermal analysis, gas turbine engine thermodynamic and aerodynamic performance, and engine control systems.
