Performs a variety of highly skilled tasks in various mechanical trades areas, including carpentry, cabinet making, laminating, welding, sheet metal work, locksmithing, etc. Installs, maintains, and repairs walls, flooring, ceilings, furniture, fixtures, etc. Fabricates parts for repairs and for new installations.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
Plan and layout job requirements.
Plans and lays out requirements, in keeping with pertinent building codes and sound construction practices. Confers with Maintenance Manager, other skilled tradespeople and outside contractors to assist in coordinating and scheduling own work activities with those of other trades. Provides cost estimates for materials, supplies, and equipment on request.
Performs construction tasks requiring carpentry, cabinet making skills.
Plan and lay out work to construct or rebuild various areas throughout the Hospital. Tear down and rebuild walls including installation of steel studding and sheetrock. Tape and patch walls for painting/finishing, and paint in absence of painters or as circumstances require.
Design, construct, and install custom-made shelving, cabinets, counter tops, work stations, storage facilities, and other specialized structures using wood, metals, Formica laminate and other construction materials.
Tear up and re-install wood and tile flooring; install cove base in finished areas. Cut glass and install windows and associated fixtures. Set up frames and install suspended ceilings. Install and repair locks and cylinders for doors, cabinetry, and other structures. Operate key making equipment and perform other related locksmithing functions.
Performs related tasks.
Performs a variety of mechanical maintenance and repair work on wheelchairs, stretchers, chairs, furniture, carts, kitchen equipment, file cabinets, and other fixed and movable structures and equipment throughout the Hospital.
Fabricates special metal and other parts required for repairs, maintenance and new installations. Makes use of welding and brazing equipment, soldering devices, shears, sheet metal equipment, break, bending and shaping tools, etc., to construct parts for special applications. Utilizes all types of hand and power tools and equipment, i.e., lathes, thread cutters, power saws, drill presses, etc. in completing work assignments.
On request, confers with vendors, manufacturers' representatives, and contractors to assist in coordinating and expediting projects involving outside firms.
Educational / Minimum Requirements:
Must have a minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent (GED). Trade school diploma/certificate in carpentry is preferred.
Must have four (4) years of experience in carpentry or related skill trades in a construction setting. Trade school education can count towards the experience.
State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:
None
Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:
General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Hospital.
Special Requirements:
Ability to lay out and plan projects. Experience in cabinet making and the use of all types of power tools. Valid Connecticut Class I driver’s license.
Physical Requirements:
Light to medium and occasional heavy lifting in excess of 50 lbs. Works in awkward positions which require bending, climbing, reaching, standing, crouching, etc.
Work Environment:
Substantial exposure to dirt, grease, fumes, indoor construction, demolition conditions.
Cognitive Requirements:
Mechanical aptitude, good math and verbal skills, and the ability to comprehend written and oral instructions
