Job Description
Summary of Position:
Working within the Office of Marketing & Communications (OMC), the Writer/Editor creates, develops, and produces content for a variety of communications that inform, engage, influence, and inspire internal and external audiences including prospective and current students and families, influencers, faculty and staff, the Boston community, and alumni. The ideal candidate will be able to understand our unique audiences and deliver exceptional and informative content to serve them. From research and creative conception through writing, editing, and proofreading, the person in this position will develop copy that drives and supports the brand vision and strategic institutional goals. The Writer/Editor will support the efforts of the Senior Writer/Editor to ensure appropriate and consistent usage of Suffolk University’s institutional brand voice and tone. The person in this position collaborates with colleagues across all facets of OMC—creative (design, editorial, photo, and video), strategy and brand, interactive (web), and production—to produce effective communications for all channels.
Responsibilities:
Work with marketing staff and key stakeholders to identify communications needs, explore and refine content ideas, and conduct research and interviews on a broad range of topics
Write and edit copy for a variety of communications including, but not limited to marketing pieces and email, recruitment collateral, promotional materials, web content, advertising campaigns, video scripts, executive reports, newsletters, and event communications
Second edit and proofread project copy as needed to ensure consistent quality, appropriate messaging, typographic/grammatical accuracy, and appropriate formatting
Work with the Senior Writer/Editor to ensure appropriate and consistent usage of University brand voice and tone
Collaborate with the Senior Writer/Editor and other University communications colleagues in the establishment and maintenance of editorial standards/style
Following trends in communication, marketing, and higher education, to identify those that may impact or influence the department’s work
Working with the OMC team to meet University goals and needs; performing other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in publishing, journalism, marketing, or communications; graduate degree preferred
5+ years demonstrated marketing communication experience, with examples or portfolio of prior work; experience in higher education preferred, agency experience is a plus
Excellent research, interviewing, editing, proofreading, and fact-checking skills with the ability to disseminate information to diverse audiences
Experience developing content for web, email, social, and print
Exceptional attention to detail and strong listening skills
Highly organized, process-oriented, and able to manage, organize, and prioritize multiple concurrent projects under tight deadlines while maintaining a high level of quality and accuracy
Proficient in relevant word processing software
Fluency in tools for web publishing and content/project management platforms
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
