Job Description
Of all the job positions at Colton’s, the Server has the most influence on the Guest experience. You must provide outstanding, enthusiastic, warm, and friendly service to all Guests. You should treat each Guest as you would a guest in your own home, providing an experience that makes them want to return.
An excellent Server will have several qualities: Professionalism: Consistently presents a neat, clean appearance, practices excellent personal hygiene, speaks in a soft voice, and avoids slang terms Friendliness: Wears a genuine smile, practices courtesy and thoughtfulness, and is consistently cheerful and outgoing Pride: Takes pride in Colton’s and in giving great service Visibility: Always remains in the dining room taking care of Guests and anticipating their needs Awareness: Continually observes Guests and other team members to anticipate a need before it becomes a problem.
Your number one responsibility is to care for Guests by doing the following: • Warmly greeting each party and giving them your name • Serving meals within the goals of 12 minutes at lunch and 18 minutes at dinner • Anticipating Guests’ needs and meeting special needs if necessary • Bussing tables with the help of the Server Assistants • Thanking and saying a sincere good-bye to your Guests • Completing side duties as will be explained to you.
Should you have a Guest who is physically impaired in some way, your first priority is to put them at ease and offer assistance in a positive, cheerful way. Make eye contact and ask the Guest how you can best help.
Another part of your job is making sure the food you serve is of excellent quality. You need to know the hold times and procedures for preparing beverages and salads as well as the standards for the meals you serve your Guests. The Guests’ opinion of your service has a lot to do with the quality of the food you serve them. That’s why you must also know the Expediter job. If you haven’t done so, read and study the Server Assistant and Expediter Manuals now.
Teamwork is key to providing Guests with a great dining experience. All members of the service team must work together to give excellent service to our Guests. • One of the team members is the Host/Hostess who welcomes Guests and seats them. Should this person be unavailable, you will help seat the Guests. • A second person on your team is the Service Assistant. Since you’ve already trained for this position, you understand its importance. You and the Service Assistant work together, talking often to give great service to your Guests. Help your Service Assistant reset tables as well as stock and maintain the service stations. • To ensure the dining room is running smoothly, service team members must communicate constantly and help each other remain enthusiastic, cheerful, and calm. Teamwork is especially important during shift or station changes.
Keeping yourself and your work area clean is critical to everyone’s health and safety. • You are responsible for cleaning and stocking your work areas (the service stations and the dining room). • It is also important for the safety of our Guests, and for you as well, that we sweep the peanut shells off the floor regularly to avoid someone slipping and falling. • Personal hygiene is critical. You have constant contact with your Guests and your fellow team members, and they’ll observe your habits closely. Wash your hands often, especially after using the restroom, cleaning a table, picking up trash, blowing your nose, or sneezing. This habit will ensure a sanitary environment for our Guests.
