Job Description
The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. Job Description
The Technology Directorate is seeking a Materials Scientist / Engineer or Mechanical Engineer to support the Structural Materials Performance (SMP) unit in the Core Materials, Manufacturing & Irradiations (CMMI) department. The SMP Unit is responsible for the rigorous materials testing and data analysis that underpins design guidance used to evaluate reactor core mechanical performance for the lifecycle of the core (manufacturing, in-service, and post-service). We are seeking an entry level engineer or scientist to join our team who will plan and execute laboratory testing for both non-irradiated materials testing and irradiated materials testing using the Advanced Test Reactor. Specific duties include:
Plan, execute, and lead test programs including data analysis and written reports
Sponsor testing at both in-house laboratories and external vendors
Conduct data analysis using various applications and sound statistical principles
Conduct data interpretation by applying fundamental results to practical applications
Regularly communicate conclusions to internal and external customers.
The US/UK program is currently undergoing extensive planning to determine the optimal path forward for delivering advanced submarine technology to the UK. In addition to the specific duties listed, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to support core mechanical properties for the materials’ aspects of the US/UK program.
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or; MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience
Preferred Skills
MS in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Materials Science
Preferred education requirements for this position include: 3.2 GPA or higher in undergraduate and/or graduate degree coursework.
Proficient in both written and verbal communication
Strong interpersonal skills and can work independently or part of a team
Experience with database or software development
Experience or coursework conducting data manipulation using MatLAB, JMP, Python, VBA, or MS Excel
Experience or coursework with mechanical behavior of materials and/or mechanical testing
