Sterile Processing Technician II, Full Time, Evenings

JOB SUMMARY:
The Sterile Processing Technologist is responsible for decontamination, reprocessing, sterilization, distribution, and storage of OR instrumentation/materials (i.e. implants, disposables); sterilizer monitoring, maintenance and documentation; OR supply maintenance and case cart assembly. Level I Sterile Processing Tech is an entry-level position. Incumbents are expected to learn the full range of duties/responsibilities. Level I Tech must promote to Level II Tech within six months of employment. Certified Level III SPD Tech must maintain certification and have more than five years experience as a SPD and/or in a Central Supply environment.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
- High School diploma (GED) preferred
EXPERIENCE
• Level I: Level I SPD Tech is an entry-level position
- Level II: Two year recent experience in OR and/or SPD preferred
- Level III: At least five years experience as a SPD and/or experience in a Central Supply environment. CS certification required
PREREQUISITE SKILLS
- Knowledge of case cart assembly
- Knowledge of surgical instrumentation
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- General knowledge of implants & surgical supplies
- Knowledge of safe practices, one-way flow, and infection control
LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:
- Levels I, II and III: BLS-Heart Saver Certification
- Levels I/II/III: current SP/CS Certification
PATIENT PRIVACY (HIPAA Compliance):
Employees in this position have access to protected health information. The protected health information a person in this position can access includes demographics, date of service, insurance/billing, medical record summary information, and all other information that may be contained in patient records. This position requires patient health information to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills related to aseptic technique principles and practices
- Demonstrates knowledge of use, function and care of surgical instrumentation
- Capable of surgical instrumentation identification, decontamination, assembly, sterilization, storage and distribution
- Demonstrates knowledge of implant sets with an emphasis on orthopedic and neurological, and cardiac trays
- Capable of processing equipment
- Demonstrates knowledge of different types of sterilizer operation, cleaning, testing, monitoring and documentation activities
- Orders, restocks and puts away supplies
- Monitors and maintains a clean and safe work area in accordance with Infection Control and Safety policies and procedures
- Assembles case carts using Surgeon Preference card file
- Orients, teaches and willingly shares information with others
- Utilizes cost-effective approaches and practice
- Other duties as assigned
