The Position
Information Technology Technician
Salary displayed includes 9.5% general salary increase effective July 2, 2023.
An additional 9.5% general salary increase will be applied effective July 2024.

The City of Ontario's Information Technology Department (IT) is seeking self-motivated individuals who understand that supporting end users is critical to the success of any information technology system. The Information Technology Technician is responsible for performing a wide range of technical support assignments supporting citywide and airport information technology systems, as well as maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing computer systems, hardware, and computer peripherals.
As part of the Information Technology Agency's Operations team, members will be tasked with responding to technical support requests. The ideal candidate is an innovative thinker, operates with independence and initiative, and demonstrates excellent interpersonal communication skills. In addition, the successful candidate will be role models for the City's Approach to Public Service - Commitment to the Community, Achieving Excellence Through Teamwork, and Doing the Right Thing the Right Way – and emulate the qualities of a 5 Tool Player – Leader, Thinker, Operator, Communicator, and Public Servant.

Background Check Requirement
As part of their duties, the IT Technician may be assigned to work in the Ontario Police Department facilities or will have access to Police Department information systems. As a result, employment in this position is subject to the satisfactory completion of a background investigation conducted by the Ontario Police Department. This background investigation will include the passing of a polygraph test. Candidates may be disqualified from further consideration during the background investigation for a variety of reasons including but not limited to: an excessive number of traffic citations and/or collisions; arrests and/or convictions; a history of illegal substance abuse; poor credit history (factors include bankruptcy, foreclosures, liens, repossessions, and recency); or thefts from a previous employer. Additionally, IT Technicians may be assigned to work at the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) and must possess the ability to pass all background/reference checks, knowledge examinations, as well as aptitude tests necessary to obtain and maintain a security badge to access secured areas of the Ontario International Airport. Applicants must pass a Criminal History Record Check (CHRC) and Security Threat Assessment (STA) prior to receiving a security badge.

Examples of Essential Functions
The essential functions typically performed by the Information Technology Technician include the following:
Receives and responds to end user help desk requests; documents requests in help desk software; provides end user technical support.
Troubleshoots problems with software, personal computers (PCs), printers, and peripherals.
Coordinates with senior staff to resolve complex problems.
Installs, configures, maintains, and updates computer hardware, software, and computer peripherals.
Provides instruction and training in the operation of computer equipment and software applications.
Maintains service request records and knowledge base.
Maintains inventory of hardware and peripherals; maintains City surplus and e-waste equipment.
Sets up mobile devices for end users.
Assists senior staff on projects and other tasks.
On-Call duty on a rotating basis.
Qualification Guidelines
Education
High school diploma or recognized equivalent.
Experience
Previous work in the information technology field with emphasis in technical support. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in computer science, information technology, or a related field may substitute the required experience.

License
Valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
Desirable
Experience or working knowledge of municipal or other government operations. Information Technology certification in operating systems, networking, and/or other technologies. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in computer science, information technology, or a related field. Excellent customer service and communication skills.
Knowledge of
PC hardware, LAN, WAN, backup software and hardware, and Storage Area Networks (SAN).
Operation and maintenance of PC hardware and application software.
Routers, switches, Virtual Private Networks (VPN), Network Interface and Wireless Access Point, and network security.
Principles and practices of technical support.
Computer operating systems including but not limited to Microsoft, Linux, and MacOS.
Special Requirements
May be required to work any shift in a 24-hour/day, 7-day/week operation on a rotational basis including weekends and holidays. Ability to work overtime.
