Position Title: Foster Family Trainer
Position Summary
The Foster Family Trainer for NYAP’s La Jornada (The Journey) Program focusing on Long-Term Foster Care (LTFC) will provide training and certification for the foster families who will care for youth who have fled their country of origin and arrived in the U.S. without a parent or legal guardian.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performing all work in a manner consistent with the National Youth Advocate Program’s Mission, Values and Philosophies
- Implementing the pre-service training curriculum for foster families consistent with regulations for accreditation and licensing.
- Conducting trainings with a variety of approaches/delivery mechanisms to meet the needs of the foster families, ensuring alignment with adult learning principles.
- Facilitating in-service training for foster families to ensure families receive training hours consistent with licensing and accreditation standards and agency guidelines.
- Conducting CPR/First Aid training and ensure all approved families maintain certification.
- Maintaining records of approved and waiting foster families that are consistent with licensing and accreditation standards.
- Leading the development and implementation of an on-going retention plan for foster families.
- Facilitating communication and information during referral and intake process to assist with the matching of youth and families. · Participating in the CQI process and represent the program on committees as requested.
- Cultivating and maintain positive relationships with the external professional community, referral networks, and other programs/services by representing the agency in a positive and professional manner to market and or sustain services.
- Providing on-going support and interventions to foster parents, guiding and encouraging them as they care for youth in their home.
- On an as-needed basis, providing comprehensive social work and case management services for children and families consistent with NYAP’s wraparound philosophy, practice principles, professional ethics, and agency and licensing standards.
- Performing other duties as requested.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education, human services or a related field. Master’s degree preferred
- A valid professional license as required and acceptable by state or contract regulations.
- Three (3) years’ experience in the human services field.
- Bilingual English/Spanish fluency is required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, automotive insurance, and a good driving record.
- Must be able to organize, navigate, and physically travel to various destinations possibly including airlines, trains, and buses and escorting youth including out-of-state trips up to to unify youth with families.
- Understanding of foster care and adult learning principals preferred.
- A willingness to work flexible and non-traditional hours with a possibility of being on call on nights/weekends, in the service of foster caregivers, families of origin, and persons served.
- Proficient use of desktop and laptop computers, Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Excel, internet search, people management programs, smart phones and tablets, printers, fax machines and photocopiers as well as software including word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
- Minimum automobile insurance coverage of $100,000/$300,000 bodily injury liability.
OTHER SKILLS
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact with individuals of different racial, cultural, educational, and economic backgrounds.
- Capacity to be flexible and responsive to youth served, foster caregivers, system partners, and internal customers.
- Must be open and willing to work non-traditional work hours as well as take on on-call responsibilities.
- Must be able to embrace working as a diverse team both effectively and respectfully with persons of any background, race, color, religion, sexual orientation, ability, national origin, or culture.
- Demonstrates tolerance and respect for the ideas and actions of others.
- Must be comfortable with public speaking.
- Demonstrate a high degree of customer service and relationship building abilities with a focus on caring for people, connecting communities, and promoting peace.
