Job Description
Part-Time Research Mentor - Ivy Scholars Education
Overview
What do ball-throwing robots, long-shot political campaigns, cutting-edge cancer research, and Salvador Dali-inspired dance pieces all have in common?
They’re all research subjects for past Ivy Scholars students!
As an Ivy Scholars Research Mentor, you will be tasked with helping Ivy Scholars students develop their candidacy and prepare for the college admissions process by engaging in meaningful research at the high school level. Your purpose will be to walk alongside our students as they pursue an independent academic question with the aim of being published in a scholarly journal. You'll start by getting to know your students on a deeper level through an informational interview. This, alongside other aspects of their candidacy, will inform your research mentor service. In this role, you'll work alongside one of our expert Candidacy Building mentors who will devise an effective strategy to impress college admissions officers.
You'll also assist your students by demonstrating their intellectual interests, interpersonal strengths, and core values by helping them create amazing research-based projects. As College Application time nears, your research will inform college applications to top-tier academic institutions. During this time, you'll hand off your student to one of our expert College Admissions Mentors.
Regardless of what you research with your students, your goal remains the same: to help them showcase their unique abilities and personal values by engaging in meaningful research.
This is more than just a side hustle. Effective research can make or break a college application. Our most successful research mentors combine their passion for college admissions with a reverence for the ultimate outcomes of our Ivy Scholars families.
With these things in mind, Ivy Scholars is seeking a part-time research mentor to work with 3 to 7 Ivy Scholars families at once. Mentors will be expected to meet with students an average of once per week and attend a weekly all-hands meeting. All in all, our research mentor will be expected to work between 5 and 10 hours per week.
Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
- Engaging in meaningful, constructive, and valuable research alongside your students.
- Communicating and collaborating with Ivy Scholars management to make the most of your training period.
- Working alongside Ivy Scholars Candidacy Building and College Application Coaching mentors to achieve optimal outcomes.
- Helping high school students understand and develop their intellectual and interpersonal strengths.
- Assisting in student outreach and publication to a variety of research publications, such as IEEE, BMC, World Scientific (and it's subsidies), etc, with a high academic and scientific impact.
- Coordinating research projects lasting between 3-18 months with students to boost their college candidacy.
- Counseling parents on optimal research projects, including timeline, strategy, and value to college applications.
- Write thorough, insightful documentation on student progress.
- Manage relationships with around 3 to 7 Ivy Scholars families.
- Maintain a minimum of billable hours.
- Additional duties as requested.
Knowledge
Ideal candidates are knowledgeable about high-school-level research and getting student work published in respectable scientific and industry journals. Further, candidates should be well versed in research writing composition, editing, and styling. Ideal candidates also have experience, whether first or second-hand, of Ivy+ institutions. Experience with Asana, Google Suite, and Acuity is a plus, although not required.
Skills
The ideal candidate will:
- Be well-versed and experienced in research.
- Hold an advanced or terminal degree.
- Be experienced in working with high schoolers to engage in meaningful research in preparation for applying to Ivy+ institutions.
- Understand the principles of candidate strategy and be capable of applying a strategic mindset to student research.
- Be a clear communicator.
- Be detail-oriented.
- Be hardworking and willing to work during atypical periods of work, such as weekends and nights.
- Be comfortable with taking feedback on written work and be capable of incorporating comments into future drafts.
- Be comfortable communicating directly with parents and stakeholders to provide updates and resolve issues.
Traits
First and foremost, you need to find joy in working with exceptional high school students to engage in meaningful research in preparation for application to top-tier universities. This is your opportunity to impact students’ lives by showcasing their unique experiences in the most effective possible way. Simultaneously, you’ll also be able to hone your craft as a researcher and educator. You should have a good degree of social and emotional intelligence. After all, you will have to build a friendly rapport while maintaining a professional hue since you're working with teenagers. On occasion, it will also be necessary to ask the right questions to get to the heart of their passions.
You should also be comfortable communicating directly with parents without management present.
Compensation
You will be paid at a rate of $60 per hour for both billable and non-billable hours. Other compensation will include perks, such as:
- Ivy Scholars typically disburses cash bonuses of $1,000 to $3,000 at the conclusion of each admissions cycle.
- We offer each of our mentors a stipend of $1,500 for their professional development. These funds can be used on books, conferences, or training, subject to company discretion.
- Other benefits may be included on a case-by-case basis and are subject to management discretion.
Ivy Scholars full time mentors receive additional perks and compensation.
Full-Time Employment
Exceptional part-time mentors are often invited to join Ivy Scholars on a part-time basis. This is done on a case by case basis and is done at management discretion. Part time employment is not a guarantee of future full time employment.
Long Term Growth
We're in this for the long haul. Ivy Scholars strives to create synergistic, long-term relationships with both our clients and our mentors. We recognize the value of subject matter expertise, institutional knowledge, and experience in education. We offer each of our mentors a budget for their professional development. These funds can be used on books, conferences, or training.
Defining Success
Your success will be measured in a couple of different ways. We strive to be as transparent as possible, so we want you to know how you'll be graded as an Ivy Scholars research mentor. First, are you able to effectively and efficiently help our students engage in meaningful research? Next, are you able to leverage scientific knowledge, operational efficiency, and excellent customer service to leave parents and students enthusiastic about your performance? Lastly, are you a professional, dependable, and dedicated member of the Ivy Scholars team?
Ivy Scholars also has a set of internal benchmarks with which mentors are graded. These benchmarks include things like billable hours, family satisfaction, and admissions outcomes.
Logistics
This role is completely remote. You will meet with students via Zoom and work inside Ivy Scholars' internal system. You will report to company management on a weekly basis. All necessary software and other platforms will be provided for you. Ivy Scholars offers a technology stipend for any required hardware, such as high-end microphones or web cameras.
Timeline
Candidates can expect to hear back from us within two weeks after their initial submission.
Your Teammates
At Ivy Scholars, you'll be working with a select group of highly accomplished, motivated educators. You can learn more about who you may be working alongside by reading our about us page: https://www.ivyscholars.com/our-team/
