Introduction
The Maryland Department of Labor, (MDOL), Division of Unemployment Insurance is accepting applications from qualified candidates for the position of UI Tax Accountant I. This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year after the closing date of the announcement.

LOCATION OF POSITION
Baltimore City, Maryland.
POSITION DUTIES
This job requires carrying out accounting duties in the Cashiering Unit of the Accounting and Fund Management Section of the Contributions Division. The main goal is to aid the Unemployment Insurance Fund Management Chief and Accountant Supervisor I in creating accounting and management reports for the Unemployment Insurance Program. Apart from this, the job also includes reconciling the Unemployment Insurance Contribution Cash System and keeping precise accounting records. Moreover, the position entails helping with the withdrawal of funds for the unemployment insurance benefit account.
- Reviews and authorizes financial transaction records for submission to fiscal control agencies.
- Investigate problems and develop or modify existing procedures to resolve issues.
- Reviews and approves reconciliations of accounts.
- Maintains organized and accurate documents for audit trails.
- Participates in the audit process of division’s fiscal operations.
- Providing documentation of financial transactions and formulating and implementing corrective action plans precipitated by audit exceptions.
- Reviews and takes action on work items generated through the BEACON system and ensures subordinates are taking action on work items.
- Handles daily wires of the unemployment insurance benefit and clearing accounts in accordance with unemployment insurance law.
- Handles daily drawdown of funds.
- Maintains the unemployment insurance subsidiary ledger by daily posting balances in the clearing accounts.
- Handles and maintains the Clearing Account transactions dealing with the lockbox and ACH payments which are forward to the bank by Maryland employments and posted.
Education: A Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university, or a Bachelor’s degree with 30 credit hours in accounting and/or related courses.
Experience: None.
Notes:
1. Applicants who have met the requirements for admission to the CPA examination prior to July 1, 1974 will be considered to have met the educational requirement referenced above.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the Accounting Officer classification or Financial Management specialty codes in the Accounting field of work on a year-for- year basis for the required experience and education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.
- Experience using a computerized fiscal application software, including spreadsheet and database applications.
- Experience preparing, analyzing, and interpreting financial reports and statements.
All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of
Unemployment Insurance (Labor/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to Labor/DUI as a result of unemployment insurance overpayment/fraud. Any unpaid debt may have an impact on whether or not a candidate is offered employment.
