Job Description
What You Will Be Doing
The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Oil and Gas seeks an experienced Petroleum Geologist to work in the Resource Evaluation (RE) Section. The RE Section provides the subsurface foundation for collaborations with other sections that result in recommendations regarding the management of the State’s oil and gas resources. The ideal candidate would have a well-rounded understanding of the upstream oil and gas industry in Alaska, expert knowledge of petroleum exploration, appraisal and development methods, proficiency using subsurface mapping and interpretation applications and digital databases, effective time management skills, be intellectually curious, and possess outstanding written and verbal communication skills. This is a permanent, full-time, Range 26 exempt position located in Anchorage. Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.

You will be working within a team that brings, through supporting research and analysis, oil and gas technical knowledge and understanding to the service of decision-makers, with the overall goal of managing Alaska’s oil and gas resources in a manner that protects the best interests of the people of Alaska. This team enjoys strong collaboration with members of a wider team of other disciplines, in a process that provides the incumbent with the level of information and perspectives required to execute your role effectively. You will also be exposed to and work with sensitive technical data, which you would need to keep confidential, based on Alaska’s statutes and regulations. Recommendations from your work and the work of your team will impact important resource management decisions, as well as drive policy positions taken by the Division and Department.
Core Responsibilities
The incumbent will work with a diverse technical team of petroleum engineers, geologists and geophysicists to:
Succinctly articulate subsurface issues to other relevant disciplines and provide the technical foundation for collaborations with unit managers, commercial, leasing, permitting, and royalty accounting staff to develop written recommendations on producing or emerging units, including:
Applications to form or modify units and participating areas.
Unit plans of exploration and development.
Revisions to royalty production allocations (redeterminations) based on analysis of reservoir simulation models.
Perform volumetric analysis of discovered resources and reserves.
Further the understanding of petroleum potential in nonproducing and emerging areas of Alaska.
Provide analysis that leverages operational experience in exploration, appraisal, development and production of oil and gas resources, including a working understanding of current drilling and well evaluation technologies, and understanding of development and production practices such as well completions, testing, stimulation and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes.
Evaluate oil and gas prospectivity of proposed land selections, relinquishments, and trades throughout Alaska.
Work independently, but also work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams, in a manner that builds consensus and enables the team achieve business objectives.
Collaborate constructively with oil and gas companies in a manner that builds trust and leads to effective management of the State’s resources.
Handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
Provide technical guidance regarding terms and conditions for areawide lease sale and exploration license proposals.
Provide sound technical information to the offices of the director, commissioner, governor, and legislative bodies.
Conduct industry outreach to promote exploration and development of Alaska’s petroleum resources; respond to requests for technical information from other agencies, organizations, and individuals.
Contribute to the collection and analysis of data to incorporate, optimize, and present a biannual production forecast ultimately used in the legislative budget process.
Utilize geologic visualization and modeling software such as Geographix and Emerson ROXAR RMS in day to day work.
Collaborate with Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys and U.S. Geological Survey geologists on Alaska petroleum systems studies and oil and gas resource assessments.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
This position will work in an office location in downtown Anchorage. A typical workday would be a combination of time for individual work, as well as meetings and collaborations with other professionals. When appropriate, the potential for a hybrid work schedule between the office and telecommuting exists.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
Expert knowledge of petroleum exploration, appraisal and development methods, preferably with greater than 10 years of experience, several of which were working Alaskan basins or fields
Proficiency in using well data in interpretation workstation environments and subsurface mapping and analysis software incorporating geologic, reservoir, and digital databases
Strong analytical skills
Effective time management skills, including the ability to advance multiple projects in parallel
Strong internal motivation, critical thinking, and an eagerness for continuous learning
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts; with parties of varied technical background and understanding
Commitment to teamwork and effective collaboration
Familiarity with Alaska oil and gas statutes and regulations
Adaptability and leadership potential
