GENERAL OVERVIEW:
Guided by the mission of First Missionary and the vision of the Pastor, the Director of Music and Worship is a primary steward for planning and leading the congregation in meaningful experiences of worship. As a professional-level employee, the Director provides musical and administrative leadership to all music, worship, and performing arts ministries that serve the congregation; supervises all salaried, stipend,
and volunteer staff who work in music and worship-related ministries.

Job Description
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide overall leadership, coordination, and accountability for all choirs, ensembles, liturgical dancers, and other groups that make up the Music and Worship Ministry to enrich the congregation’s worship life and experiences.
- Assist the Pastor in planning worship services for the church and be responsible for selecting music with attention to the liturgical calendar.
- Select music from all genres, including sacred, classical, traditional, and contemporary.
- Plan liturgical arts experiences for all regular, special, and seasonal presentations in cooperation with the Music and Worship team and the pastoral staff.
- Attend church staff meetings, regular worship planning meetings, and plan and facilitate regular Music and Worship staff meetings.
- Serve as principal director of one or more of the Church’s music units.
- Administer the operational and business affairs of the Music and Worship Ministry (with input from the staff and the Pastor), including the development of a budget, overseeing expenditures, and projecting capital purchases, as well as the maintenance and care of all supplies, equipment, and musical instruments.
- Provide the Music and the Worship staff and choir members opportunities for growth by promoting, facilitating, and sponsoring occasional concerts, workshops, symposia, and retreats to enrich the ministry, the church, and the community.
- Coordinate the performance schedules of all Music and Worship ensembles and individuals.
- Consult with the pastoral team regarding necessary preparations for church-related activities (weddings, funerals, etc.), emphasizing the appropriateness of liturgical expressions (i.e., dancing and music).
- Keep abreast of current art methods, materials, and administration, utilizing them where appropriate.
- Be available nights and weekends for music ministry events.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- The Director of Music and Worship reports to the Pastor.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- High churchmanship: A strong commitment to Jesus Christ and the Christian church.
- Theologically grounded and liturgically informed. Professional and personal commitment to Christian teaching and principles.
- Education: At least one degree in the field of music with emphasis on the organ, piano and/or choral conducting.
- Experience: A minimum of 3 years of successful experience in a music and worship ministry leadership role or its equivalent.
- Abilities: A competent and compassionate leader; an understanding and appreciation for the breadth and variety of musical/arts tradition within the black church; good verbal and written communication skills; able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and Church family; must be willing and able to maintain confidential information concerning personal matters; strong decision-making ability and attention to detail are equally important; effective time-management skills; possess advance knowledge of computers and proficiency in software programs, including
Microsoft Office applications, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Publisher, Excel, database systems and use of the Internet and social media platforms; possesses the gift of hospitality and tact, and a helpful, cheerful, diplomatic and caring servant to all; must possess the desire to aid the Pastor and church in being faithful stewards of the ministry.
