Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Data and Systems Specialist for Education and Research at the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland will work closely with appropriate faculty and staff to develop and implement information systems tools to support strategic and operational management of the College’s research and education activities. The The Data and Systems Specialist for Education and Research position will support the: Associate Dean for Academic Affairs; Associate Dean for Research; and iConsultancy Director in the following tasks:
Academic Affairs Data and Systems (60%):
Conduct user-needs assessments to capture data needs and requirements and advise on data solutions;
Create, link, and integrate a complete, accurate, and up-to-date database leveraging existing data sources (e.g. KR, Faculty Success, IRPA, reports.umd.edu, Data Warehouse, and related systems);
Use reports.umd.edu, Data Warehouse, and related systems to examine and deconstruct complex academic data sets to generate reports on College processes, procedures, and programs based on a set of criteria provided by end users;
Develop, deploy, and manage internal information management systems to serve the data and information needs of the Academic Affairs team, including systems used for academic planning, scheduling, and staffing purposes supporting academic program-related tasks (such as admissions and enrollment analysis, program progress checks, longitudinal analysis of course scheduling, staffing and instructional support data, etc.); and
Attend to issues related to the storage, accessibility, and security of student and academic program data.
Research Data and Systems (20%):
Conduct user-needs assessments to capture data needs and requirements and advise on data solutions;
Create, link, and integrate a complete, accurate, and up-to-date database leveraging existing data sources (e.g. KR, Faculty Success, IRPA, reports.umd.edu, Data Warehouse, and related systems);
Use reports.umd.edu, Data Warehouse, and related systems to examine and deconstruct complex research data sets to generate reports on College processes, procedures, and programs based on a set of criteria provided by end users;
Develop summary and exception reports for the research support team to track research activities for the purposes of strategic and operational planning; and
Design custom queries and retrieve information about College research accomplishments from UMD databases including grants and funding, awards and honors, invited and keynote talks, and publications.
iConsultancy (20%)
Support the iConsultancy leadership for projects involving data management, creating a stable of clients able to offer capstone or other experiential learning activities on data management issues, and to scope and implement those projects.
Minimum Qualifications:Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Information Science, Computer Science, or related areas.
Experience:
2 years of data management or other relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Reliable, organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated.
Ability to coordinate daily tasks, communicate effectively, and work as directed.
Task-oriented, team player.
Preferences:Preferences:
Graduate degree in Information Science, Information Management, or Data Science.
Research or professional experience related to the College’s research areas.
