Human Resources Generalist

Reports to: Vice President of Operations
Location: Grand Rapids, MI (Hybrid)
Position Summary
The Human Resources Generalist is a key member of our nonprofit team, responsible for managing and overseeing the daily functions of the human resources (HR) department. This role supports the Vice President of Operations in delivering HR services that drive the organization’s strategic goals. As the organization grows, the HR Generalist will ensure efficient HR processes, enhance employee relations, and foster a positive work environment. The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in recruitment, employee relations, benefits administration, and professional development, with a passion for serving in the nonprofit sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Recruitment & Onboarding: Manage the full-cycle recruitment process, including job postings, screenings, interviews, offers, and onboarding of new employees.
- Compliance: Ensure compliance with labor laws, employment regulations, and internal policies.
- Cultural Competency: Promote and foster cultural competency within the organization by ensuring HR practices are inclusive, supporting diversity initiatives, and providing training to enhance staff awareness and sensitivity to cultural differences.
- Training & Development: Partner with the VP of Operations to design, implement, and manage training and development programs aimed at enhancing employee skills and promoting professional growth.
- Performance Management: Assist the VP of Operations in managing employee performance review processes, providing guidance to managers on performance improvement plans and employee development.
- Employee Relations: Address employee concerns, mediate conflicts, and contribute to building a positive and inclusive workplace culture, in tandem with the VP of Operations
- Benefits Administration: Evaluating renewal processes and benefit plan selection. Oversee employee benefits programs (e.g., health insurance, retirement plans, leave policies), ensuring that employees are informed and engaged with available resources.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the VP of Operations and other department leaders to align HR practices with organizational objectives and strategy.
- Administrative Tasks: Perform day-to-day HR administrative tasks, including maintaining employee records and preparing HR-related reports.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or related field.
- 2-4 years of experience in a human resources role, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
- Strong knowledge of employment laws and regulations.
- Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
- Proficiency in HRIS software and Microsoft Office Suite.
Compensation
- Salary Range: $41,000 - $52,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
- Benefits include health insurance, retirement plan, paid time off (including a week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, in addition to vacation and sick time), staff summer fun day, and opportunities for professional development
