Summary:
The Early Head Start (EHS) paraprofessional will assist the EHS teacher in the classroom setting. They will perform a variety of tasks to meet the children's daily care needs. They care for children from ages 1 year to 3 years old. Daily tasks may include diapering, feeding, holding, singing, dancing, reading, playing, and teaching. The Early Head Start paraprofessional also assists in planning and conducting activities and programs in the EHS classroom.
Minimum Requirements:
Experience: 6 months to 2 years of experience in childcare or early childhood education.
Education: High school Diploma or GED
Interpersonal Skills: Work normally involves contacts with persons beyond immediate associates generally regarding routine matters for purposes of giving or obtaining information which may require some discussion. Outside contacts take the form of service to the public (visitors or vendors) requiring ordinary courtesy in providing assistance and information.
Knowledge:
o Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
o Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
o Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, tribal or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
o Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
Skills:
o Active listening: Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
o Coordination: Adjusting actions in relation to others' actions.
o Critical Thinking: Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
o Active Learning: Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making. Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things.
o Problem Solving: Identifying problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
o Reading and Writing Comprehension: Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents. Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
Abilities:
o The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
o The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
o The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing that there is a problem.
o The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
