Job Description
General Description:
The Medical Assistant/Front Desk Specialist, as a member of the Surgery Practice team, is responsible for ensuring that timely and safe care of the highest quality is available to all patients in the Practice. S/he works with and supports the physician in the care of patients in the office, while ensuring that established quality standards are achieved. The Medical Assistant/Front Desk Specialist is responsible for providing caring and supportive basic nursing care to clinic patients following established standards and practices. The Medical Assistant/Front Desk Specialist is responsible for appointment scheduling, answering phones, greeting patients, insurance pre-authorizations and chart management. This position also provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinic services. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively articulate and explain required information to patients Promotes and adheres to all regulatory and safety standards; OSHA, JCAHO, Infection Control, HIPPA. Maintains required certifications and core competencies.
Essential Functions:
- Verifies patient information by interviewing patient, reviewing medical history, taking vital signs, and confirming purpose of visit or treatment. Documents findings in patient health record.
- Assists the physician in procedures in the office as needed.
- Organizes and prioritizes daily work to ensure patient’s needs are met and provider schedules run efficiently.
- Monitors patient flow, escorts patients to the appropriate room, accurately obtains patient identification, allergy history, domestic abuse screening, obtains and records vital signs, per departmental standards in Electronic Medical Record (EMR) or on appropriate forms.
- Notifies provider with any abnormal vital signs, elevated pain scores or safety concerns. Observes and reports any abnormal symptoms or behavior to appropriate clinical staff member.
- Prepares patient for the appointment based upon the diagnosis, procedure and/or department protocols.
- Includes proper patient attire (gowns/shorts etc), proper pre-visit tests completed, and proper set-ups for the procedure to be performed etc.
- Utilizes appropriate technique in room preparation and while assisting with procedures/exams.
- Provides and reviews appropriate instructions to patients regarding any diagnostic test and procedure.
- Provides patient with written educational material, including diagnostic preparations, as necessary. Document that patient instructions were given, as well as patient’s response, to ensure optimal healthcare outcomes.
- Greets all incoming patients in a friendly and courteous manner. Schedules office appointments and hospital follow-up exams. Collects co-pays from patients, and accounts for co-pays per office policy.
- The Physician/Practitioner may delegate reasonable and prudent medical acts for the MA to perform under the Physician/Practitioner direct supervision. Competencies to be assessed by Physician/Practitioner or delegated to the Clinical Manager.
- Contributes to the advancement of the practice and the health of the community by participating in and conducting community outreach programs and classes regarding healthy lifestyle, smoking cessation, and stress reduction.
- Maintains a safe and comfortable therapeutic clinic environment, maintaining clinic and patient confidentiality and quality standards. Ensures that infection control and other patient safety procedures are followed.
- Maintains accurate, legible, and confidential records.
- Maintains exam rooms by monitoring and replenishing supplies and performing routine housekeeping and disposal and handling of hazardous waste. Maintain inventory of medical supplies and contacts Practice Director to order additional supplies as needed.
Education and Training Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Certified Medical Assistant in the State of New Mexico preferred
- BLS (American Heart Association) certification
- Experience in medical office preferred
- Computer proficiency
- EMR experience preferred
- Ability to work with highly stressed patients in a fast paced environment, while maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor
