Job Description
Alaska West Express provides truckload transportation throughout the United States and Canada, specializing in shipments to and from Alaska where we are a leader in transporting liquid- and dry-bulk products, hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals, and petroleum products. With our fleet of flatbeds, stretch, lowboy, single- and double-drop trailers, we are recognized for dependable service to the oilfield, mining, construction, and manufacturing industries.
Alaska West Express is looking for a Line Haul Driver. The successful candidate will drive tractor-trailer combination to specified destinations in accordance with company procedures and government regulations. Will apply knowledge of commercial driving and skills in maneuvering vehicle at varying speeds to transport and deliver products or materials, usually over a long distance, generally between Fairbanks and Prudhoe Bay, AK.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

- Attendance and timeliness are essential functions of this position.
- Secures shipments using a variety of cargo straps, ropes, lumber, etc.; this process may involve climbing up and on to the top of tankers, up and onto the deck of a flatbed, on to the flatbed load, and/or into and out of containers as needed.
- Inspects truck and trailers for defects to ensure safe operating conditions before, during, and after trips. Notes condition of various equipment items such as tires, lights brakes, fuel oil and water. Submits written report on truck and trailer condition at the end of each day.
- Ensures that all shipping documents (manifest, bills of lading, delivery receipts, hazardous material placarding, etc.) required to move the shipment is available and complete.
- Hooks and unhooks trailers from tractor or from converter dollies.
- Maneuvers vehicle in safe and efficient manner in situations such as heavy traffic, inclement weather, and difficult loading/unloading facilities. Install and remove tire chains as required by weather conditions.
- Maintains telephone and/or radio contact with dispatcher.
- Maintains records required for compliance with State and Federal regulations including but not limited to the following: driver’s logs, vehicle inspections, hazardous material manifests and permits.
- Reports any and all safety hazards and/or accidents involving cargo, vehicles, driver, personnel or citizens at large. Reports accidents (vehicle and/or cargo) or on-the-job injury immediately to the dispatcher.
- Complies with all company safety policies, including use of protective equipment and Fit for Work.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Five years OTR experience preferred. Alaska drivers north of Fairbanks - Minimum of two years of Haul Road experience. (or as determined by the Service Center Manager).
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:
Must possess valid class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with Hazardous Materials and Tanker endorsements in addition to an acceptable driving record. Must possess current DOT required medical card.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with co-workers, supervisors, and managers, to understand procedures and warning signs and or markings in the English language, to respond to inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, procedure manuals and shipping documents; ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
MATHEMATICAS SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to understand detailed written and oral instructions; ability to prioritize and problem solve in time/safety-sensitive situations.
