The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions is recruiting for a Criminal Justice Technician 1/2, for Palmer Correctional Center (PCC) located in Sutton, Alaska.
What you will be doing:
We are seeking an energetic, well-organized individual capable of performing a variety of paraprofessional work. Primary job duties include interpreting Court documents, calculating prisoner Time Accounting Records for Court imposed sentences, and the recording, submition, and tracking of prisoners DNA samples. Additional tasks include data entry and retrieval in various law enforcement databases, institutional record maintenance, filing, general office clerical work, and frequent professional interaction with outside agencies to include the Courts, Law Enforcement, Attorneys, and members of the public.

This position is a flex CJT I/II position in which the incumbent will learn the full range of duties involving interpretation of court documents and application of Judgments. The PCC Records Office offers a seniority based flexible schedule. The skills developed in this position would prepare the incumbent for a potential promotion to Probation Officer I or Correctional Officer I within the Department. This position promotes public safety by ensuring the sentences imposed by the Court are calculated correctly, while ensuring the legal rights of due process are afforded to defendants remanded to our custody.
The working environment you can expect:
Palmer Correctional Center is an all-male, sentenced facility located at Mile 58 Glenn Highway. You will be part of a small team working closely with Correctional and Probation Officers, providing support and technical assistance to departmental and other criminal justice agency personnel. Duties include regular contact with Court employees, other law enforcement agencies, and members of the public via e-mail, and by telephone. Your daily work will involve use of computer programs and databases, though daily tasks will vary depending on departmental priorities.

- Experience in computer programs such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook and other database programs.
- Ability to multi-task with frequent interruptions while remaining calm and organized so as to complete tasks accurately, effectively and in a timely manner.
- Ability to interpret, understand and apply Alaska laws and statutes, and the Department of Correction's Policies and Procedures.
- Willingness to attend the DOC's Basic Time Accounting course before the completion of the incumbent's first year of employment; and an Advanced Time Accounting course when made available.
Criminal Justice Technician 1:
Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
AND
One year of advanced clerical experience.
OR
One year of law enforcement or criminal justice experience equivalent to Correctional Officer 1, Adult Probation Officer 1, Court Services Officer, Juvenile Probation Officer 1, Juvenile Justice Officer 1, or State Trooper Recruit with the State of Alaska.
SUBSTITUTION:
Post-secondary education will substitute for the experience on a month-for-month basis (3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience).
Special Note:
High school graduation "equivalent" includes a G.E.D., or completion of any basic adult education course of 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 hours per week), or six months of work experience performing duties related to the job class, or twelve months of work experience involving some routine tasks related to the job in question, or highest grade of school completed plus amount of work experience which totals 12 years.
Criminal Justice Technician 2:
One year of paraprofessional experience in criminal justice, juvenile justice, probation, parole, public safety, law enforcement, corrections, court, legal services, law office, social services or public assistance programs or functions.
OR
One year of law enforcement or criminal justice experience equivalent to Correctional Officer 1, Adult Probation Officer 1, Court Services Officer, Juvenile Probation Officer 1, Juvenile Justice Officer 1 or State Trooper Recruit with the State of Alaska.
SUBSTITUTION:
Post-secondary education in criminal justice or social sciences will substitute for the required experience on a month-for-month basis (3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the I or II level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The salary range is identified at the top of this notice and depends on the experience of the selected candidate(s). Starting salary will be determined by the level at which the position is hired. If filled at level I, promotion to the level II will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
PREA NOTIFICATION
The Department of Corrections follows and maintains federal and state requirements standards including, but not limited to, Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards which apply to all public and private institutions that house adult or juvenile offenders. PREA standards preclude the department from hiring or promoting anyone who has engaged in, or been convicted of any conduct which would violate PREA standards related to sexual assault including:
Sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution;

Education completed in foreign colleges, universities, or high schools may be used to meet the minimum qualifications listed above. If utilizing this education, you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the post-secondary institution or high school. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

Please be aware – this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN)/Alaska Corrections Offender Management System (ACOMS). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN/ACOMS. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
