Position Focus:
The Research Assistant at the Yale School of Public Health (YSPH) will have the opportunity to work directly with the Dean of the school. The Research Assistant is involved in fast-paced, non-laboratory research aimed at addressing key ongoing and emerging problems in public health. Current topic areas include firearm injury and gun violence, digital health and innovation, health communications and misinformation, health equity and inclusion, climate change and other pressing public health topics.
The Research Assistant will collaborate with a mosaic of faculty and research team members of different disciplines in public health and related sciences. The diversity of projects and exposure make this position a non-traditional research assistantship with varying responsibilities. While many tasks are rapid-response in nature, the work is principally project-related, including data collection, literature reviews and synthesis, drafting of reports and presentations, organization of project meetings and materials, and assistance with development of research proposals. The position also performs additional related tasks as necessary. All tasks may be performed independently under the supervision of the Dean’s Chief of Staff and Director of Strategic Initiatives.
Essential Duties
1. Leads a unit or function, including overseeing and coordinating projects or work processes, and distributes the work of a minimum of two full time employees. 2. Researches and collects data through laboratory/ scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for designated research assignments. 3. Codes data accordingly to research specifications. Uses a computer terminal to input and retrieve data and to generate reports. 4. Processes and summarizes data using scientific or statistical techniques. Assists in data interpretation and analyses. Reports on status of research activities. 5. Oversees data entry of data transmitted from project sites into database. 6. Sets up, operates and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus. Formulates and prepares scientific solutions and media. Recruits study participants. 7. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey instruments. 8. Provides ongoing assessment of training needs of site specific research assistants. May oversee and instruct research staff. 9. Assists with contacting and tracking research participants, scheduling interviews, mailing and following-up on surveys, data coding and entry into computer database. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Three years of related work experience in the same job family and a Bachelor’s degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
