Job Description
Position Summary: Under general supervision, deliver care to patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation, in accordance with established philosophy. Provide care and support to patients before, during and after surgery, and assist the surgeon and the surgical team in their tasks.
Qualifications And Education: The eligible candidate will have completed an accredited Surgical Technology Program. A certification as a Surgical Technologist is preferred, but not required. The candidate should have a minimum of one (1) year of perioperative services experience as a Surgical Technologist. The Surgical Technologist will maintain appropriate continuing education, to include Basic Life Support (BLS).
General Experience: It is not required; however, it is highly recommended that the Surgical Technologist has previous experience in the following surgical specialties:
- ENT
- Ophthalmology
- Orthopedics – General
- Orthopedics – Sports Medicine
- Pain Management
- Plastics, to include Oculo-Plastics
- Podiatry
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
- Function as a scrub person during operative and other invasive procedures by:
o Assembling supplies and equipment required for the procedure;
o Preparing and organizing sterile supplies and instruments for the procedure;
o Performing accounting procedures in concert with the RN circulator;
o Assisting with placement of sterile drapes;
o Providing instruments and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure;
o Maintaining an organized sterile field;
o Ensuring sterility of the field and taking corrective actions as needed.
o Preparing sterile dressings.
- Clean and prepare surgical instruments for processing and transport them to the decontamination areas.
- Assist with post-procedure cleaning of the operative or other invasive procedure room and preparation of room for subsequent patients.
- Participate in ongoing educational and competency verification activities applicable to scrub person activities.
- Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Language Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with the public, peers, and physicians. Ability to speak English.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to apply the understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problem solving of several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Must be about to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and subject to interruptions.

- Ability to wear a respirator/mask.
Work Environment: Exposed to bloodborne pathogens, anesthetic gases, sterilizers, electrical and mechanical hazards, confused or combative patients’ bio-contaminated waste and unpleasant elements. Subject to stressful situations; occasional long or irregular hours.
