Job Description
GCI's Network Technician Trainee will be a hands-on career opportunity to work directly with skilled technicians, engineers in the fields of a telecommunication’s Network Operations industry. Provide operational support for the company’s core IP, MPLS, carrier Ethernet, Wireless Data/IP network systems in accordance with design criteria and quality goals. This is an entry-level position within the discipline; must have a basic understanding of Networking, installation, modifications, and test procedures. Ability to execute basic equipment installation, test and turn up under close supervision.
Data IP Focused:
Systems Administrator
Access protocols, Security
Configuration and troubleshooting of CISCO routers and switches.
Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers. VLAN
Cisco NCS platform.
Ethernet and TCP/IP networks
802.11n client authentication and registration process.
Linux/UNIX and Windows server.
Shell scripting/automation and log file analysis.
Internet protocols I/P functionality.
Database management, especially SQL.
Communicate a reference design using standard office tools such as Visio and other office software.
Knowledge of programing languages C++, Java
Network Maintained Focused
Routine OSP system troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair
Stand by power supply maintenance
CLI Leakage repair
Monitor critical network elements.
OSP construction activities

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum 1 year of technical experience focused on, LAN/WAN Networking, Telecommunications, Data/IP networks, data communications, and wireless is desired.
High School diploma or equivalent is required.
An associate degree or a combination of relevant experience and/or education/certification;
Or military experience; sufficient to substitute for the required year.
Certification: Industry specific certification Cisco-Certified Network Associate, Juniper Network Certified Associate (JNCA and CCNA are highly valued)
AFSC: 3D0X02, ED1X1, 3D1X2 – relate to Core Admin focus.
Physical Requirements: Physical effort may include stooping, kneeling, touching, feeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Clarity of vision to see near, mid-range, and color. Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
Working Conditions: The work area must be quiet and free of distractions. Lighting must be adequate and without glare. Distracting noises should be kept to a minimum. The employee’s desk must be adequate, designed to safely accommodate the equipment the employee must use, e.g., computer, printer, keyboard, monitor etc. The employee must have reliable connectivity to the internet to access GCI via VPN. Employee workstation must comply with GCI’s ergonomics standards. May require additional hours to meet project goals or deadlines. Occasional travel for business and training purposes is required.
The company and its subsidiaries operate in a 24/7 environment providing critical services to Alaskans and may need to respond to public health and safety matters or other business emergencies. Due to business needs employees may be contacted outside of the core business hours to respond to the immediate emergency. You will be requested to provide an emergency after hours contact numbers.
Driving Requirements (if applicable) : Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a satisfactory driving record.
