The State Corporation Commission’s (SCC) Bureau of Financial Institutions (BFI) seeks Financial Institution Examiners to participate in the examination of state-chartered banks and credit unions. The selected candidates for these positions will work in BFI’s Depository Supervision Section and will participate in team-based examinations of either state-chartered banks or credit unions. The Examiners will assist in the evaluation of a financial institution’s financial condition and performance; prepare and analyze balance sheets, income statements, and other supporting schedules; verify and reconcile accounts; and perform securities portfolio analysis. The Examiners will be responsible for documenting work and for drafting examination comments for inclusion in final examination reports. Examiners communicate with staff at banks and credit unions during examinations and make appropriate recommendations for resolving weaknesses identified during examinations. These examinations are typically conducted on-site at financial institution locations within the Commonwealth of Virginia, which may require substantial overnight travel (approximately 50%). The SCC offers flexible telework options, career growth, and professional development opportunities including on-the-job training, certifications, and designations.
Qualifications
Preferred qualifications for this position include some professional experience working in a financial institution (credit union or bank); some audit experience; and/or a degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, or a related field. Knowledge of accounting theory and practice and familiarity with various software programs (Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe) is essential. The ability to analyze and interpret financial data, prepare schedules, and to create and manipulate spreadsheets in data processing software applications is essential. Ideal candidates will have the ability to express ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing; demonstrate strong organizational skills; adapt to a changing work environment; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with Commission staff, industry personnel, and the general public. Examiners must exhibit a willingness to learn and an ability to research and apply both State and Federal regulations related to either state-chartered banks or credit unions. Dependability and the ability to work effectively both independently and within a team are very important for this position. The ability to travel overnight up to 50% of the time is required.
The anticipated starting salary range for an Examiner with related professional experience in a bank or credit union is $55,000 - $65,000. The anticipated starting salary range for an Associate Examiner with limited or no experience with a related college degree is $49,900 - $55,000.
